Arch Linux Desktop Installation

Arch Linux is targeted at servers and does not distribute a desktop bundle. Even so, it makes an excellent desktop foundation for people who want a frequently updated O/S with all the latest features, bug and security fixes, and available software since it is continuously updated. Arch Linux provides cutting-edge software and security like Gentoo without the requirement of having to build packages from source, and the loss in software efficiency compared to using Gentoo for a desktop with modern hardware is generally insignificant. On slower hardware, Arch Linux packages tend to run much faster than Red Hat or Ubuntu counterparts.1)

Users of Arch Linux should update their software on a weekly basis, or at least monthly. Large enterprises that want to update desktops infrequently (e.g., quarterly) would probably find Arch impractical because of the huge number of changes that happen over such a long time-span. By contrast, other popular distributions based on Red Hat or Ubuntu have much fewer updates, so are easier to maintain with infrequent updates.

The speed difference is very noticeable on the Raspberry Pi, where some operations run at least four times faster in Arch Linux vs. Ubuntu.
